Storms in the Midwest this week not only produced deadly tornadoes, but devastating floods--something Arkansans are unfortunately all too familiar with.
The town of Des Arc is slowly recovering, almost three months after flood waters ravaged homes and businesses there. Water levels are getting back to normal, but it has been a slow process.
(Gene Sheffer, Des Arc Resident) “This got so deep where we are standing. You couldn't even wade it in boots. We had boats floating here."
Gene Sheffer has owned his property near Spring Lake for over 30 years. He watched as his home and neighborhood filled with water back in April.
Now, where the water once stood, there is only mud and debris--and the cleanup process is underway.
(Sheffer) “My stepson is doing most of the work, and friends who come in are working with him. It's just a slow process."
As for the rest of Prairie County, a judge says they are recovering well and have had a good experience with FEMA (web|news) . He also says the county is waiting on some additional federal money to defer their cost of cleanup.
They should have that money by this summer.
