The wife of a term-limited lawmaker has won the Democratic nomination for her husband's House seat in a runoff election.
Jody Dickinson's victory in House District 58 Tuesday gave her a triumph that two other legislative wives were unable to attain in last month's primary election.
Dickinson defeated L.J. Bryant in the Democratic primary runoff for the seat being vacated by outgoing Rep. Tommy Dickinson, D-Newport. The matchup was one of three legislative runoffs that likely sent new faces to the state House.
In all three races, the Democratic nominee won't face an opponent in the November election unless a write-in or Green Party candidate shows up.
With all 69 precincts reporting, Dickinson had 52% of the vote and Bryant had 48% for the District 58 seat, which represents all of Jackson County and part of White County.
In south Arkansas, a Camden businessman defeated Union County's emergency management director in a runoff for another House seat. Garry L. Smith, the owner of a plumbing and electrical supply business, defeated Yancey Kyle in the race for House District 7 representing portions of Union and Ouachita counties. Smith won't face an opponent in the November election unless a write-in or Green Party candidate enters the race.
With all 28 precincts reporting, Smith had 73% of the vote and Kyle had 27%.
James Word defeated Delton Wright in the Democratic runoff for House District 16, which represents part of Jefferson County. Word is director of housing for the Area Agency on Aging of Southeast Arkansas and Wright is a member of the Jefferson County Quorum Court.
With all 14 precincts reporting, Word had 66% of the vote and Wright had 33%.
