The city of Benton is vying for more land, but some residents are against the idea. About sixty Saline County residents gathered Tuesday night to learn more about a proposed annexation. They're calling it an Island Annexation. The land's surrounded by Benton, Bryant and Bauxite. Some residents say they simply don't want to be part of any city limits. This quiet stretch of Saline County land is part of 25-hundred acres the city of Benton wants to annex. One hundred and seventy people live in the area, which is surrounded by Bryant, Benton and Bauxite. Many residents live here to be out of city limits, but with Benton's population is up 25% since 2000, the Mayor says his town needs more space. (Mayor Rick Holland, Benton) "Our city's growing. This is just the natural progression of our city and our future. That is the main reason we'd like to annex this area." Officials explain residents would gain the city's fire and police services, but property taxes would go up. And some residents say they don't want city restrictions on things like construction or animal control. Joy Buchanan says she may move if the deal goes through, and she's not alone. (Joy Buchanan, Saline County)"We've had several property owners say if we are annexed, they will sell out and move north. They will leave the county." Still, the Mayor says the council will likely approve the annexation at it's July meeting, it would take effect immediately. (Buchanan)"I think it's a crying shame that this is being forced down our throats." Another informational meeting is set for July 1th. The council would vote later in the month.
