The Adult Education Center has been offering English as a Second Language--or ESL--classes for years. But now they are taking the classes to the communities that need them most.
ESL instructors teach the basics of English in a new class that is now being offered at Mosaic Church in southwest Little Rock.
(Debbie Boyd, ESL Teacher) “We found out about this church, and we realized that was probably a place that we could offer some services that would get out into the community, and maybe get us some more ESL students and get us working together.”
The free classes are offered by the Little Rock School District's Adult Education Center, which usually has classes on Tuesday and Thursdays, but are hoping a new Monday-evening class will be popular for the Hispanic community, since most of their students are Spanish-speaking.
The classes focus on how to communicate in real-life situations.
(Boyd) “We try to do everything a parent would need to get along, as far as going to a doctor--that vocabulary that is necessary--emergency, medical, whatever to get you through life.”
It's a fun way for students to learn a skill that's considered essential.
(Boyd) “We have a great time with our students. They love this class and we love them.”
