Little Rock - An Arkansas legislative committee has advanced a measure that calls for a study of isolated school districts with dwindling enrollment and the effect that consolidation with another district would have.
The House and Senate Education committees approved the proposal by Sen. Randy Laverty, D-Jasper. Among those testifying was Deer-Mount Judea School District Superintendent Richard Denniston, who said he wants the study to go forward.
Legislators agreed to hold a meeting on the subject at Denniston's school district in north Arkansas in September.
Denniston said that if legislators could see the isolated nature of his district, they would get a better idea of why the district is listed as isolated.
Denniston said an evidence-based study could lead to legislation that would not buck the state Supreme Court's Lake View ruling, which legislators are eager to not have reopened.
