Mena - It was a simple act of kindness that did not go unnoticed: A group of Hot Springs teenagers who simply reached out to some peers in need.
On April 9th, a tornado ripped apart Mena. With all the devastation and loss of life, it was understandably decided to cancel the high school prom that weekend.
When Hot Springs High School--some 85 miles away--heard the Mena seniors were not going to have a prom, they stepped in.
(Eric Lenox, Hot Springs Senior) “After we heard about the tornado, we thought, ‘Hey, let's raise some money. We had two days to do it, and we ended up raising $762. We did pretty good. I was proud.”
The kids set up a table in the lunch room. Students dropped in extra change from their pockets--and it really added up.
(Samantha Hankins, Hot Springs Senior) “We also donated a lot of dresses. We just wanted to help their prom, and their school, because we'd want somebody to do it for us. (I'Nita White, Hot Springs Senior) "And also, former students, and faculty, also donated money.”
Mena had their prom the same weekend Hot Springs held theirs, and they used the money sent from the Spa City for food and decorations.
The Mena seniors sent a huge banner--signed by all the seniors--as a thank you.
(White) ”It's kids helping kids. Usually you don't see teenagers helping other teenagers. You see adults helping teenagers. This is more reached toward teenagers helping each other.”
And it's a life lesson that is not lost on these teenagers.
(Lenox) “When you're good to people, you'll be blessed.”
(White) “It's always good to help other people, because you never know when you might be in need.”
