A new jail is open in De Queen for Sevier County prisoners.
Before, the inmates were either bused to the Miller County jail in Texarkana or kept in the Sevier County Courthouse's basement -nicknamed "The Dungeon."
Sheriff John Partain says the new jail will save the county $10,000 to $12,000 a month, because they will no longer pay for other counties to house their prisoners.
The county's original jail was the top floor of the courthouse, but that closed because there was no fire escape. The jail in the courthouse's basement opened in 1974.
The jail, paid for a sales tax increase passed in 2005, can hold 74 prisoners.
