Windstream Corp. announced it earned $123.7 million in its first quarter -- a profit increase of 22% for the Little Rock-based wireline phone company.
Windstream earned $.27 per share, compared with $99.9 million, or $.21 per share, one year prior.
Windstream formed in 2006 when Alltel Corp. spun off its traditional phone business and merged it with Irving, Texas-based Valor Communications Group Inc.
Windstream is the fifth-largest local phone company, serving parts of 16 states. The company focuses on rural areas.
