Authorities in northwest Arkansas say they've arrested a man on suspicion of human trafficking after they found him driving a van with 12 suspected illegal immigrants riding in the back.
A Benton County sheriff's deputy pulled over 19-year-old Osvaldo Cruz-Arellanes on Interstate 540 late Tuesday night. The van had a forged, handwritten license plate.
Authorities say Cruz-Arellanes told police he was being paid to smuggle the 12 Mexican nationals to Chicago, Memphis, Pennsylvania, Virginia and other locations.
Temple Black, a spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement, says the eight men and four women will be deported to Mexico.
Authorities say the 12 crossed the border near Douglas, Arizona. Authorities would not say where Cruz-Arellanes is from.
