Gillett, AR - The Dewitt school board voted Tuesday night to close the Gillett junior high and high school. Kindergarten through 5th grades will remain open. Gillett schools were annexed by the Dewitt school district, and have been fighting to remain open. The superintendent says the decision was necessary, and keeping the schools open was not financially feasible, but parents are still heartbroken.
(Gary Wayman, Superintendent) “This was a very tough decision on the board, and all the administration, but it was done with the best interest of the school district at heart. It was due to basically declining enrollment in the outside campuses.”
(Deeanna Ballard, Gillett Parent) “It’s hard for parents to do this because they have kids that are torn in two different directions. You can’t be a parent and be in two separate areas. I want the best thing for our school, and I want the school to remain open.”The transition process is still being discussed.
