Governor Beebe says the state's embattled Martin Luther King Commission suffers from "systemic" problems and may need to be restructured by lawmakers in next year's legislative session. Beebe told reporters today that he would support looking at changing the structure of the 26-member King Commission. In recent months, the commission has been beset by infighting that the governor has called an embarrassment to the state. A member of the commission said today he would drop a lawsuit challenging the legitimacy of some commissioners. But Beebe said he doesn't know if he would begin making appointments to the panel again. Beebe said he thought an effort would be made in the 2009 legislative session to change the setup of the commission. The panel was formed in 1994 to promote racial harmony, principles of nonviolence and awareness and appreciation of the civil rights movement.
