Little Rock - A dormant computer worm is expected to activate Wednesday, affecting an estimated 5 million computers worldwide.
Experts say the worm--called “Conficker”--is so sophisticated, a computer can become infected simply by accessing the internet.
The worm is rumored to launch on April Fool’s Day, and experts are unsure how dangerous the virus could be to your personal computer.
(Dallas Harmon, AR Network Experts) “It may be linking your credit card information, your bank account information, or your personal email address book out to hackers, basically.”
Dallas Harmon, a network engineer, says performing updates through Windows will lower your risk of infection.
So what do you do if your computer acts up Wednesday?
(Harmon) “As nervous as I am about this thing, I would simply turn the power switch off--quickly. Because you don't want to give it time to activate its payload.”
