Rison - A Rison teacher who taped some of her first-grade students to their desks has been suspended with pay, and the Cleveland County Sheriff's Department is investigating.
Parents of several students in Laura Gatlin's first-grade class at Rison Elementary School complained to the school board at a Monday meeting. Parents said some children's mouths had been taped.
Jeffrey Prescott, who is both the school board president and the Rison police chief, told parents that the board will take action in the matter. Prescott said the sheriff's department is investigating. Gatlin was suspended March 4th.
About 200 people attended the school board meeting, where Prescott asked parents to give the board time to address the situation.
Phone numbers listed for Gatlin and her husband, ex-teacher Robert Michael Gatlin, had recordings saying the lines were no longer in service.
Gatlin's husband is a former teacher who is accused of sex crimes. On November 25th, prosecutors charged Robert Gatlin, 44, with sexually assaulting fourth-grade students at Coleman Intermediate School in Pine Bluff. He has pleaded not guilty to six counts of second-degree sexual assault and is scheduled for trial April 14th in Jefferson County Circuit Court.
