Lockesburg - A former Murfreesboro police officer will go on trial June 23 on a first-degree murder charge in the shooting death of his girlfriend.
Daniel Gardner, 42, of Nashville is scheduled for a pretrial hearing May 27th. Prosecutors accuse him of killing Marie Cogburn, 34, of Murfreesboro.
The shooting occurred January 10th in Lockesburg. Police say Gardner told officers he used an AR-15 rifle to push the woman toward a door, and the gun went off.
Gardner was a police officer in the 1990s for Murfreesboro. If convicted, he could face a sentence of life in prison.
