Metro Latino: Cinco de Mayo

It may only be the 11th of March, but the date known as Cinco de Mayo is less than two months away.
Lulac volunteers are now working hard to make this year's festival and celebration bigger and better than ever.
For ten years Hispanics in central Arkansas have come together in the River Market to celebrate the Mexican Holiday Cinco de Mayo.
(Julian Calzada, Lulac 750 President)"Cinco de Mayo festival is basically the different cultures of Latin America coming together to celebrate a holiday in Mexico. And we just try to get people's different viewpoints, and we bring the people together, the different foods and we celebrate the Hispanic culture."
It takes dozens of volunteers and hours of preparation to put together an event of this caliber. More than 5-thousand people are expected to attend this year. And up 40 vendors, including many Latin American food booths.

And although this is a fun celebration, the Cinco de Mayo event is also a fundraiser for Lulac scholarships.
(Calzada)"We've given out 35 to 45 scholarships throughout the last three years and up to 60-thousand dollars in scholarships and that's basically to support the Hispanic students to further their education."
Organizers hope to make this year's festival the best yet.
(Clazada)"We've had great participation from the different groups and clubs supporting us. It's been fantastic, we're just hoping for a beautiful day like today."
The Cinco de Mayo celebration will be held in the River Market. It's always on a Sunday so this year it will be on May 4th.American food booths will be there also.
