Little Rock - The Arkansas Education Board has ruled that the Cushman School District is too small and that it will be annexed into Batesville's schools.
Cushman has 240 students in grades kindergarten through 12th. The district has good student performance and is financially sound, but it does not have the 350 students the state set as a minimum in 2003.
When Cushman is annexed on July 1, the state will have 244 school districts.
Cushman Superintendent Gary Anderson told the Education Board Monday that the district wanted to join Batesville, though it had a choice of merging with a number of other districts.
Cushman is in Independence County, about 10 miles northwest of Batesville.
