When Brenda Guffey saw a photo of two
children in her backyard near Viola after the February Fifth tornado, she knew it was a treasure that needed to be returned.
Guffey scanned the photo on her computer, printed it on a flier and took it to the Gassville area. When no one recognized the photo, she sent copies of the photo to several newspapers in an attempt to return it to the family.
Little did Guffey know the photo had been blown from about 190 miles away and pictured a little girl who was killed in the tornado.
Shortly after the photo ran in The Atkins Chronicle, two people who recognized the boy and girl. Guffey found out the childhood photo was Brent Sutterfield of Russellville holding his half-sister, Emmy Cherry of Atkins.
Ten-year-old Emmy Cherry died February Fifth in the tornado that ripped through Atkins, along with her parents, 40-year-old Jimmy Cherry Jr., and 43-year-old Dana Cherry.
Guffey immediately put the photo in the mail.
The Cherry family is grateful the photo was found and plans to make copies.
Jimmy Cherry's mother, Kay Cherry, says some items belonging to her son's family were found in Timbo, on the other side of Clinton.
Among the items recovered were Dana's Bible, a puzzle piece and coloring book page.
Guffey said she wished a statewide Web site could be set up to post items found in the storms, so families like the Cherrys can regain their family photos.
