Severance Tax Hike May Not Need 3/4 Vote

Attorney General Dustin McDaniel says increasing the state's severance tax on natural gas through the Legislature may not require as many votes as other tax increases.
McDaniel told a county judges' association Thursday that his office has begun researching whether increasing the tax on natural gas production would require a 3/4 vote in both chambers of the Legislature.
If the larger vote isn't necessary, it would help efforts to try to increase the tax through the Legislature rather than through a proposed initiated act currently being reviewed by McDaniel's office.
Governor Beebe has said he would consider calling a special session to raise the tax if a deal can be worked out with legislators and natural gas firms.
