Wild Weekend Weather

10 PM Saturday Update... Fellow bloggers, we have a winner!  Osceola, Arkansas, located in Mississippi county has received 1 foot of snow and it's still coming down there!

8 PM Saturday Update... Hey everybody, I'm starting to collect snow amounts for the 10 PM news.  Please let me know your in the comment section.  Don't forget pictures!  Send them to photo@katv.com

6:30 PM Saturday Update... I have nothing new to add except... enjoy the snow!  A couple inches will be possible in central Ark.

5:45 PM Update... 7 inches now in Paragould and still snowing hard.  Snow now sticking on grass in west Little Rock.  I have streaming live video now out of Paragould and will show it in 15 minutes at 6.

5:30 PM Saturday Update... I'm watching a video feed from Oaklawn here at the station and it's snowing pretty hard there.  Snow continues in Little Rock.  I'm working to get live streaming video for our newscast out of NE Arkansas.  Hopefully I'll get it.   The temp. will drop below freezing after the precip comes to an end.  There is a chance some of the left over moisture could freeze on bridges and overpasses tonight so please be careful.  Also, slick roads are being reported in NE Ark.  Memphis now has 2 inches on the ground with a location near Blytheville nearing 2 inches.

Please send photos to photo@katv.com or upload them to the "You News TV" section of our website.

5:15 PM Update... Ninja just called in from Marmaduke with 2.5 inches on the ground, snowing hard, and roads are slick.

4:30 PM Update... Bobby Powers is reporting light snow now in Benton with a temp of 34.  He's right, the radar is beginning to get active in central Arkansas as the upper low is on the move.   We have sleet and snow mix here in downtown.   Here's a picture from Ryan Vaughn in Paragould.  He's the chief meteorologist at KAIT in Jonesboro...

4:15 PM Update... 4 inches of snow now in Paragould and light snow flurries in west Little Rock.  Looking at the comments below, I see places south and west of Little Rock are getting some sleet.  Here's another picture from Ninja with heavy snow in Paragould.  You can see the big flakes.  Roads are slick with highway 49 snow covered.

4 PM Saturday Update... Ninja says it's snowing hard in Paragould.  He's out snow chasing and sent this picture into the weather center.  Roads are getting slick near Jonesboro as well.

3:30 PM Update... Ninja now has one inch in Paragould and it's sticking to the roads.  He's trying to send pictures, but is having some issues.  I'll keep you updated.  My wife called to report sleet in west Little Rock.  Also, the snow is flying now in NE OK and western Arkansas as the upper low moves south and east.  I do expect some snow in central Arkansas, but no accumulations.

3 PM Saturday Update... WeatherNinja is chasing snow this afternoon and he's in Paragould.  I just got off the phone with him and he's reporting moderate snow with half an inch on the ground .  He's about to send me a picture and I'll post it here as soon as possible.

Noon Saturday Update... The first little round of precip. went through this morning with the upper low still off to the north.  Expect it to bring the mixed bag of weather later this afternoon and evening.  Everything still is on track and the same from the last forecast.  I have been looking at what this low will do when it hits Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina.  Some of those places will see several inches of snow with thunder.

I am still optimistic that snow flakes will fall in Little Rock this evening, but nothing big expected.  You know I have been tracking this possible event since the beginning of the week and this may be it for the season so enjoy.  I wish I could bring a bigger snow for everyone.

7 AM Saturday Update... Everything continues on track with the strong upper low bringing snow for north central to northeast and east central Arkansas.  As of 6:30 AM, it's already snowing in Fayetteville, Harrison, and Springdale.  I think there could be some accumulations from Mountain Home to Jonesboro to Memphis northward around 1-3 inches or more on grassy surfaces.  Here in Little Rock, it still looks like mainly rain changing to light snow before ending with no accumulation.  The way the upper low is tracking, the amounts of moisture look very little to nothing for central, southwest to south central Arkansas.  The wind will be another issue today with sustained winds around 15-20 mph with higher gusts.

PLEASE SEND US YOUR PHOTOS TO photo@katv.com  OR YOU CAN UPLOAD THEM TO THE "YOU NEWS TV" SECTION OF OUR WEBSITE.

8 PM Friday Update... The new model data is slowly coming in and everything looks on track.  I actually like the NGM model showing temperatures falling all day into the upper 30s with winds out of the north-northwest 20-25 mph and gusty.  This means wind chill readings will be well into the 20s.  The NAM indicates 850 mb (@5K feet) temperatures dropping to-10 to -12 degrees Celsius.  This is a very cold core low with strong lift.  As this system pulls away from Arkansas and gets even stronger, I think some areas of the southeastern United States may experience thundersnow.  As far as snow amounts across Arkansas are concerned, the track of the low indicates the best chance for seeing accumulations will be across north central and northeast Arkansas where minor amounts may be found on grassy surfaces.  Here in central Arkansas, if the rain changes to snow, warm surface and ground temps. will prevent it from sticking.

I'm working early Saturday, so I'll keep you updated on the air and here on the weather blog.

4 PM Friday Update... The NAM is going bonkers with the upper low and snow across the NE half of the state.  Underneath this low, temperatures will drop with big, wet snowflakes.  I still don't see temps. getting below 32, but northeast Arkansas could see light accumulations on grassy surfaces.  The models will do a poor job forecasting temps Saturday.  I expect readings to fall into the upper 30s when the low moves overhead.  It will also be very windy Saturday with sustained speeds up to 20 mph with higher gusts.   This could bring the wind chill temperature down into the upper 20s.  You have to be amazed how the weather can go from 70s and severe weather to wintry conditions in less than 24 hours.  Believe it or not, this low will bring snow far south into Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina.  How about that!

Ninja may go snow chasing tomorrow. LOL.  I want his pictures and anyone else who sees flakes falling.  Please send them to the You News TV section of our website or e-mail them to photo@katv.com

Also, Ninja, I remember the snow on March 8th, 1994 in northern Arkansas.  Harrison received almost 2 feet of heavy, wet snow.  My friend Rob and I went snow chasing and got as far as Clinton and had to turn around because the roads were bad.  I can't believe I remember that, but I have video of our trip up there on VHS.  I have to try to find it.

11 AM Friday Update... The target area according to the 12Z model data is still the NE half of Arkansas with the southern extent possibly getting into central Arkansas.  I still believe temps. remain above freezing so no problems are anticipated. The best chance for the showers to mix with or change to snow will be during the afternoon Saturday as the upper low moves overhead.  Below is our exclusive futurecast model.  Don't look at this expecting accumulations.   I think the shaded area indicates the best chance for flakes to fly.

8:30 AM Friday Update... Our exclusive model futurecast now indicates rain changing to snow as far south as central Arkansas.  This is only one model forecast and not an official one yet.  I will post the images from Furturecast later this morning so check back into the blog.  Again, no accumulation expected.

First of all, those storms last night were loud as the thunder scared our dog, Oliver, under the covers!  There were several reports of hail across central and western Arkansas.  Here's a picture from Bryant from the You News TV section of our website.

The chance for snow Saturday is real and should be the highest across north to northeast Arkansas.  A quick review of the the data this morning from the GFS indicates 1 inch or more of snow from Fayetteville to Clinton to Bald Knob to Helena.  The NAM is similar.  This is only a model forecast so don't get too excited.  I don't see how anything significant accumulates due to the warm ground and temps. Sat. ABOVE freezing.  I do think the area outlined above is a good indicator as to where the flakes will fly.  As for Little Rock, I would not be surprised to see a few flakes mix in.  I don't expect this to be a big weather maker, but it will be windy and cold Saturday.  This is Arkansas weather at its best... from severe storms to snow all in a couple of days.

Hey Todd, I checked www.weather.com and they have an interactive radar. It looks like this snow storm is rotating. It's center is about in Memphis. It looks like the other snow from Kentucky could wrap around and get some more parts of Arkansas. Thats what I saw though. I may be wrong, but I don't know???? This Arkansas weather is crazy. It can be 60 one day and snowing the next!!!!!!

MM
Just started snowing in Monticello. Awesome! Hope it sticks!

Devin Flemens
Hey Todd happy for all you that got snow we just seen a few flakes in sw ark guess ill have to wait till next year

nancy
hey todd you were right u said we would see snow in little rock and we are its beautiful

weatherfanatic
Late Feb and early march does not let us down once again in Central Arkansas for the second straight year!! I love it!!! It's 31 here and snowing moderately!! I live in the higher terrain of WLR and everything is covered except the streets. That may change later tonight!!

I wanted to see it on my way to Fayetteville and it looks like I will!! We may end of with 2-3 inches, this wrap-around is right over Central Arkansas for a change and continues to redevelop!!

George
I just uploaded a photo of the snow up here on Napa Valley Road. The snow at times is very hard, and blowing. As some points it's like a blizzard.

Bobby Powers
moderate snow in Benton and temp has dropped to 31.2F. Roof tops and grass getting a dusting. Wind gust are really blowing the snow around, pretty cool. Watching the wide view of the radar you can see the spin around the low. The band that set up over East and NE Ark has been there all day. No suprise to see 7inch totals in that area.

katie
moderate snow in west little rock accumalating on cars exposed objects, this is so nice to see its wonderful

George
It's snowing here on Napa Valley Road in Little Rock.

Bobby Powers
Todd and weather bloggers, I am going to enjoy being wrong. Very light snow in Benton starting to fall. The radar is starting to light up with activity across central arkansas. It's down to 34F. Are we in for a March surpise..??? Awasome to see the snow accumulations in NE Arkansas. The numbers in the morning are going to surpise some people. I would not be surpised to see Memphis with over 6 inches.

henry
hey todd been sleeting an snow for about an hour on col glenn rd

mike
hi todd looks like little rocks streak of a snowless winter is in jeopardy im glad

Devin Flemens
Hey Todd we have light SNOW in umpire in sw ark its 34 now.

Caleb
Seeing some action here in Malvern snowing and 32

Bobby Powers
Todd and Weather bloggers, I was wrong about the rain, we got some nice rain showers in Benton eariler. We are experiencing windy and cold conditions here in Benton. It's 36 degrees...!!! Looks like the temps feel into place but track of the low is missing us. I am watching the back edge as it wraps around and pulls Southeast. Keep your fingers crossed that some of wrap around moisture comes into central arkansas. There is still a chance.

Watching the snow develop over East and North East Arkansas is fascinating to see it snowing in memphis. That's only 130 miles east of LR. From the looks on the Radar the snow is coming down pretty good, I bet it is something to see.

Caleb
Hey Todd Ive been watching this particular snow band in greenwood/fortsmith it looks like its gonna miss little rock but from what im seeing its making a beeline for Malvern looks like moderate snow.

nick lamb
pulaski county has just been put under a WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Caleb
Hey Todd I just wanted to say that it was sleeting hard for a few. Also the next round looks much more serious and possibly give us here in Malvern a good dusting.

Devin Flemens
Hey Todd it was 42 at 7:00am and it has droped to 35 at 1:00pm here at umpire feb is giveing us one last winter day. lets get back to 70

Aaron
Its been snowing and sleeting in Des Arc since 11 this morning. It's not sticking to anything but is cool to see it fall finally in the Big DA

Michelle
Hey Todd looking at weather hoping for snow of course, but i just thought I'd let you know it is sleeting a little here in Des Arc, probably won't amount to anything, but it is amazing how it can be so warm one day and like this the next don't you just love Arkansas weather... like I have heard if you don't like the weather here in Arkansas stick around a few days it will change :).

jacob

kelly
it looks like everything going around little rock we just are snakebit i mean it makes me sick i wish my kids could have seen snow they are upset that were going to miss out again i mean its just a shame i woke up hoping for some good news and it is worse news knowing that south mississippi going to get snow but nothing here i mean i just think it is sad. mother nature just wont do us any favors

karen
hey todd was noticing the dewpoint in little rock at 6am was 35 i know it has to be 32 dewpoint to get snow do u think evaporational cooling may take place if precip were to fall

john
hey todd looks like little rock not going to get anything i noticed pulaski county under know advisory, but white county is n thats only 30 minutes from little rock we just cant catch no break an its frustrating

tina
hey todd i notice all the tv stations saying little rock wont see any snow tomorrow, the only one i see that says we might see a little snow in little rock is the weather channel, i will be watching you on tv in the morning, i sure hope the forecast changes im sure hoping that upper level low tracks just off couse a little so little rock can get some snow..............................................................Tina, we have been calling for some snowfall mainly for north and northeast Arkansas. Little Rock will be borderline, but I am optimistic we will see it mix or change over. No problems for us in central Arkansas though.-Todd

Devin Flemens
Hey Todd dont look like we will se snow in the sw but im going to the game sunday mabe i can see a little on the ground. we also had some hail lastnight

Bobby Powers
I remember the big snow in 1994. That was the year the Razorback Basketball team was pretty good. A big snow hit durring the SEC Basketball Tournament. Tulsa got around 30 inches and I-44 was closed down. My inlaws live there and could not get out of thier driveway for few days. As for the snow tomorrow. Tough call for us folks in Benton based on Furture Cast. Head to Memphis or Jonesboro and you should see snow for sure tomorrow.

We had hail the size of marbles and quarters last night. The lightning was pretty bad too. These thunderstorms have been fun to watch. The cloud formations were very cool this afternoon. I had a lightning bolt flash right beside me while driving on I-30 in benton. It was close.

WeatherFanatic
Todd, Ninja, and all others,

I hope that we see flakes the size of half dollars!! Nothing is prettier than huge, wet snowflakes coming down! These type alone will knock the temps down a good 3 to 5 degrees. It sure would be pretty to see as we say goodbye to winter and hello to spring next weekend...

I am traveling to Fayetteville for the game on Sunday morning, and it would be nice to see some accumulation to our East as we go up 540 but it appears the current track may go more over north central and northeast Ar..oh well.

linda
hey todd i believe it all right its like the snow gets close to little rock an goes around us then snows other places, its our luck an mississippi an the deep south is going to get the snow, so yeh were jinxed.

The WeatherNinja
I agree Todd..still on track to see some flakes over the NE 1/2 (funny...Tommy Smith said you can't divide the state by 1/2 from the NE???) This should not be a problem but I would not be suprised to see some large snowflakes. I have seen large snowflakes as the cold upper level low moved overhead even though the temps at the surface were in the mid to upper 30s. I may take a trip to NE Ark if it all pans out and get some pictures to send back. Looking ahead...it does look interesting if you can believe the GFS (who can?) on the 9th/10th it looks like some wrap around snow over the state as far south as Little Rock as a storm system pulls through. Could March surprise us?? Here is a question for the bloggers? I can't remember the date but I remember a HUGE snow in Northern Arkansas in the 90s where areas close the the Missouri border got 20plus inches. Does anyone remember that?

Keep the faith and the snow will come!!!

James
It says El Dorado may get snow flakes and it's 76 degrees there I think.. with tornado like weather. Really crazy.

Bobby Powers
Todd and weather bloggers, very interesting forcast tomorrow! I still say we will know if its going to snow tomorrow on Sunday..!!! A very cold air mass in the Northern Plains will funnell cold air into this storm. Temps right now in North Dakota are minus 20F. That's pretty darn cold this time of year! There are two lows to watch. One comes out of the Rockies and the other forms along the stalled cold front near Texarkana. I my opion to get snow in central arkasnas the low in Texarkana will need to become the dominate weather feature. If the low coming out of the rockies is more dominate, then the snow stays NE of Little Rock, and we might see a sprinkle of rain or a mix before it pulls everything east! If you want to see snow for sure get into your car and drive to Jonesboro AR. They will see at least an inch of wet snow and maybe 3 inches if that are lucky. If it does snow it will not stick on the roadways and will be limited to roof tops and grass. With some trees begining to bud in central arkasnas it will be interesting to see, if they get some snow on them tomorrow afternoon. This is our best chance to see accumulating snow untill the next wierd systems develops in a couple of weeks. Remember spring break in Arkansas is usualy colder than most January Days. We could see a snow shower that week as well, but nothing to write home about, just a day we all will wish it were 80 because we want to go fishing.

Theresa.
Hey Todd, I haven't been on in a while. We live close to Landmark, off of south arch. Oh my, the weather was so bad last night. The wind was blowing so hard, the rain come down so hard. The hail was bad. When it hit the house, I went omg. I could tell it was big. I hope we don't have anymore of that Todd. I'm still waiting on the snow. I'm not giving up on it. Have a good weekend.

Caleb
Hey Todd Gfs and frank straits weather blog on accuweather.com show snow as far south as central arkansas tennesee alabama even atlanta!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
