I gathered tornado statistics for Arkansas and Oklahoma from the National Climatic Data Center. Their database goes through Dec. 31st of 2007. Then I looked at the Storm Prediction Center database for 2008. I had to carefully examine their numbers since they count the Feb. 5th tornado as several instead of one. I'm sure that will be corrected once the preliminary data becomes final. Anyway, to make a long story short, check out the graphic below. We have had several more tornadoes than Oklahoma since January 1, 2000.
We are very, very concerned about the potential for more severe weather and flooding this week. Even though we have a slight risk for severe weather late Tuesday, I am MORE worried about Thursday. Ingredients are coming together for a more significant severe weather outbreak across this area of the country. It's still a few days away and I hope it changes, but NOW is the time to get prepared. Please take the two or three minutes to sign up for "Weather Call 7". It's only $6 per year and will only warn you if you are in the direct path of the storm. I signed my mom up for it two weeks ago and it has already paid off. She got a phone call from Ned (and from me) when the tornadoes approached last Thursday. She had more than 10 minutes of warning, then her power went out and the tornado missed her by about 1.5 miles.
