Wanna Go To Soul Food Heaven? I'm Not Kidding!

It that tease didn't make you hungry you will be, once you hear more about this featured restaurant.  This week's Pam's Picks took us to Walker's Soul Food Heaven.  Literally and figuratively.  If you like pork chops, smothered or fried and home-style mashed potatoes (no instant stuff here), you'll need to check out the rest of this post, later.  Had to go to Russellville today (Wednesday) for a Pam's Picks that you'll get to see soon, so this post will be elaborated on by Thursday.  Just wanted to remind you of the location and give you the phone number for Walker's - 17th and Main in North Little Rock ( the old Cassineli's and 10th Round).  The restaurant is at the back of the building on the lower level.  Believe you me, it's worth the trip.  But be prepared, they give very generous portions, so if you're watching your waistline,  plan on dividing it in half - so you'll have a nice snack for later.   $6-8 dollars and yes they are open on weekends.  Phone # (501) 812-5904.   Remember, if you missed the televised story today, you can find it under videos, along with my other restaurant features, on KATV.com.  More to come, Thursday.  Talk to ya', then!!!

Update

Back with you now to tell you more about Walker's Soul Food Heaven.  I've actually been craving some of their wonderful spaghetti. It's quite tasty.  Linda Walker says she includes a secret ingredient, but I  found out what it was.  I had to commit to keeping it to myself, though.

Linda and her husband started in the restaurant business about 12-years-ago.  After a few moves from a small location, with a limited seating  capacity in North Little Rock to another site in on 65th Street in Little Rock, and back to North Little Rock on Prothro, they finally settled on the 17th and Main where they've been the last 3 and 1/2 years.

Linda Walker says her love for cooking started at a young age when she learned from her grandmother and mother.  That's evident in the finished product.   Linda boasts of cooking everything from scratch... even her greens, I've learned, are homegrown and picked freshed daily.  They peel all their potatoes for the mashed and candied yam varieties.  And, ten to twelve veggies are offered on the menu every day, paired with an array of meat entrees - fried and smothered pork chops- with gravy... that will have you asking for a side of biscuits to finish it off.  Walker's also features neckbones, baked chicken, oven-barbecued brisket and chicken, hamburger steak with gravy, and a meatloaf that is renowned.  While Linda does much of the cooking, she credits her husband with the often-requested meatloaf. Generous servings come with cornbread or a roll - and are ample enough for you to get your fill and then take home a doggy bag.

Finish off your meal, if you have room,  with an assortment of cakes or pies, including Red Velvet, Chocolate or Pound Cake, to name a few.  The variety of cakes changes daily but you can always find peach cobbler and banana pudding on the menu.  I am a big fan of the banana pudding.   Linda describes the latter as sweets that will truly "melt in your mouth."

Walker's is located in the downstairs portion of the former Cassineli's Italian restaurant and is a great option for those who want a delicious home-cooked meal but don't want to do the work  preparing it or dealing with the mess of a clean-up that goes along with cooking so many items... particularly from scratch. Ideal for the after-church crowd on Sunday's as well.

Walker's Soul Food Heaven's hours of operation:  Monday - Friday, 11 am - 7 pm; Closed Saturday; Sunday, 11 am - 6 pm.  In my opinion, the restaurant provides a great family atmosphere.  However, there is no set kid's menu, so sharing may be the best option.  But  the prices are quite affordable especially for what you get; typically two meat entrees with each meal.   $6-8 dollars.

Take-out is available.   For you convenience, the phone number is (501) 812-5904; Address: 17th and Main, North Little Rock.

Walker's is too high. I had fried pork chops, green beans, pototoes , gravey , rice broccli caserowe, and sweet tea. I was surprised to pay $12.21. It was good but not that good.

Walker's was delicious. I had never heard of this place before I saw it on the web and had to visit. My family and I went one night for dinner and really enjoyed it. The food was good, the restaurant was clean, and the staff was nice. The only problem was the serving area. It was compact and on a busy day it may be chaotic but I don't know for sure. Thanks Pam

Hi Ebony: Thanks for the note. Glad you enjoyed Walker's. Had dinner there just last weekend. And, I agree, the staff is friendly. Hopefully, they'll be able to manage their busy days. It's a good problem to have, though. Hard to keep a place like that a secret for long, you know? LOL Appreciate your taking time to write. Have a super weekend.

Best, Pamela

Dear Pam, WOW, what can I say!! Walkers was great. I live in South AR, but make many trips to LR with my child to ACH. We are lucky enough to get the LR news chanels down here and we watch your picks for new places to try when in town. We really get tierd of eating at the big chains with high prices, poor service and disappointing food. Walkers has that good ole down home food you can count on being delicious. My daughter had the speghetti and of course couldn't eat it all so I came to her rescue. Ha Ha!! I believe I might know the secret ingredient. But what ever it is ; it was GREAT. The Dressing was wonderful, and my husband said the Smothered Pork chops were to die for!!! I am 45 and grew up in South AR in the country on that exact same food my mother, and grandparents all cooked. Being white ; I never knew it was called soul food as a child and was puzzled when I found out what it was; becouse we all eat that good food. I just know that no one cooks like we do down south and it should have been a delacacy long time ago. I think there should be more "Soul Food" or "Good ole Country cookin";( what ever we like to call it,) restuarants. These foods make us happy and bring people together. P.S. please tell Ned thanks for his coverage of South AR when the weather is bad....but please step aside we can't always see the radar in Bradley county becouse his leg will be in the way!!HA HA!! Seriously, were counting on you for good food and Ned for Severe weather warning. Thank you all for the services you provide the whole state.

A couple of us from work had a great lunch today at Walker's. We got there early, and there was no line. (When we left, people were lined up to get though.) Chicken and dressing was the main pick, and it was tasty. The cornbread, greens, and mashed potatoes were delicious as well. One coworker said he'd like to get a taste of every veggie they had because they looked so good! I would put the price range at $8-10 though, without dessert. My lunch plate was $9.99 with tax and tea.

Would be so helpful to have hours of operation...I did call Walkers about 10:00am took awhile for them to answer I thought because they were busy cooking...got the hours 11-7 but not the days of the week. I hate to call back so I looked on your site...not there Just thought of any of your picks hours of operation would be helpful...thanks love your spot and we are off to Walkers TODAY!

Thanks for your comments, Elaine. I do typically include hours of operation, etc. Exceptionally busy yesterday, but they'll be posted. Appreciate your taking time to send a note. Hope you enjoy! Best, Pam
