I've actually been going to Leo's Greek Castle for some time now... and amazingly, it was the breakfast that had my attention. I absolutely love their breakfast pitas... then I got hooked on their Greek Omelettes which feature lamb. And I love their pancakes -they're huge - plate-size and melt-in-your mouth. They've recently added mixed-berries to the batter. Hmmmhmmm. But oh my gosh, when I tried the gryos... I couldn't stop craving them afterward! Alas, I'm trying to practice some restraint because I really could go again and again to have them.
The funny thing is Hector Parodi, or "Mr Leo" as he's called, isn't Greek at all, he's Italian and grew up in Argentina. But he says he and his wife are really good cooks so taking over the already established Greek eatery 17-years-ago really was no stretch to them.
I didn't realize the charming little neighborhood spot had been converted from a service station in the 1940's - but upon closer inspection based on the style of the building, I totally see that now. And it has been a few things in its time - a soul food place and a barbecue joint, according to Hector - apparently finding its staying power with the Mediterranean flavor.
It's very small - only about 4 or 5 tables inside and a couple of picnic benches outside. Hector is quick to point out his patio is pet-friendly, saying "dogs are welcome." Despite the capacity, I say well worth the experience if you haven't been before. You can obviously get take-out if your patience doesn't allow you to wait. Remember, it's in the Hillcrest neighborhood and many of the locals simply walk there. I asked Hector if he ever had a desire to expand his seating, he indicated he did, saying he could make more money but he also says that would take away from the nostalgia of the place and I tend to agree.
Leo's has a varied menu that features a blend of Greek and American cuisine and the staff will gladly do any number of concoctions you ask them to create - Hector says they're flexible that way. Their Garden Burgers are delicious and frankly, you forget about the fact you're not eating meat. Hector's wife does most of the desserts, including the biscotti - but they also offer cookies, chocolate cake and carrot cake. However, they order their Baklava (a popular phyllo dough, honey and nut confection).
Leo's hours of operation are Monday - Saturday 7 am - 8 pm. In my opinion, Leo's is great for families, but you better get there early to get a table. Inexpensive. For your convenience, the phone number is (501) 666-7414 Address: 2925 Kavanaugh Blvd, Little Rock
