Valentine's Ideas for the Kids

Valentine's Day is one holiday that's fit for all ages. 

On Monday's "Good Morning Arkansas," Angie Freel with the Saline County Extension Service shared some fun & tasty ideas that are sure to make your kids a hit with their classmates.

Animal Attraction

Time needed: Under 1 Hour

 

CRAFT MATERIALS:

  • Cardboard tubes 
  • Stapler 
  • Black elastic 
  • Tacky glue 
  • Animal-print felt 
  • Ribbon 
  • Card stock 
    1. Cut cardboard tubes into 2-inch lengths. Snip each so that it opens into a cuff shape.  
    2. Using a stapler, attach the ends of a 3 1/2-inch piece of 1/4-inch-wide black elastic as shown; make sure the staple points are facing outward.  
    3. Apply tacky glue to the outside of the cuff and cover the cuff and the elastic ends with a 2- by 6-inch strip of animal-print felt.  
    4. Let the glue dry, then trim the felt as needed.    Use a ribbon to tie on a note cut from card stock.  
    5. Suggested Messages:
      • "I'm wild about you."
      • "Hi there, wild thing!"
      • "Let's band together."
      • "You're so fierce!"

Bear Your Heart

Time needed: Under 1 Hour

 

CRAFT MATERIALS:

  • Small plastic bags 
  • Teddy Grahams 
  • Gummi Bears 
  • Card stock 
  • Hole punch 
  • Ribbon 
    1. To make a bunch for all your favorite cubs, fill small plastic bags (we found ours in the candy aisle of a craft store) with a mix of Teddy Grahams and Gummi Bears.  
    2. Write your message on card stock, use a hole punch to make a hole, and tie the tag on with ribbon.  
    3. Suggested Messages: 
      • "Bag of bear hugs"
      • "You're unbearably cute!"
      • "Join the cub!"
      • "I can't bear being without you!"

 

Clap Happy

Time needed: Under 1 Hour

 

CRAFT MATERIALS:

  • Card stock 
  • Marker 
  • Tube of lotion 
  • Double-sided tape 
    1. Trace your child's hand on card stock. Cut out the traced hand and use it as a template to make a second hand.  
    2. Write a message with marker. Affix the hands to a tube of lotion and add card stock hearts with double-sided tape.  
    3. Suggested Messages: 
      • "You deserve a hand!"
      • "Hands down, you're the best."
      • "I've got to hand it to you!"

 

Dynamic Duo

Time needed: Under 1 Hour

 

CRAFT MATERIALS:

  • Double-sided tape 
  • Individually wrapped treats 
  • Card stock 
  • Marker 
    1. Using double-sided tape, secure one end of 2 individually wrapped treats inside a piece of folded card stock.  
    2. Write your message with marker on the outer flap. 
    3. Suggested Messages 
      • "We're two of a kind!" 
      • "You've met your match!" 
      • "You're two cute."

Get to the Point

Time needed: Under 1 Hour

 

CRAFT MATERIALS:

  • Card stock 
  • Card stock 
  • Pencil 
  • Double-sided tape 
  • Marker 
    1. Cut a 4 3/4- by 1 1/2-inch strip of card stock, roll one end around the top of a pencil, and secure it with double-sided tape.
    2. Draw on hearts or tape on card stock ones, then write your message with marker. 
    3. Suggested Messages:
      • "Write on, valentine!"
      • "You're all write."
      • "You're so sharp!"

Rock Candy

Time needed: Under 1 Hour

 

CRAFT MATERIALS:

    1. Tape each end of a piece of string to a peanut butter cup. Tie on the other piece of string as shown, then tape the loose end to the candy box.  
    2. Wrap each peanut butter cup in a circle of aluminum foil.  
    3. Wrap the pink paper strip around the candy box and secure it with a glue stick.  
    4. Cut paper shapes and write text for the scroll wheel and playlist (or download  http://a.familyfun.go.com/Resources/global/printables/templates/RockCandy_3.pdf and print ours), and use a glue stick to attach them to the box. Write a valentine message on the back of the box

 

Just Plane Sweet

Time needed: Under 1 hour

 

Craft materials:

  • Paper
  • Printer
    1. Print out airplane template and folding instructions. Write your message as shown above.
    2. Roll both printouts into a scroll, and tie them with a ribbon.
    3. Suggested Messages
      • "You make my heart Soar."
      • "You're just plane cool."
      • "Fly high Valentine!"
