Tax Tips
If you need your tax rebate and economic stimulus payment ASAP, then you should look into e-filing and direct deposit. E-filing is fast, accurate and easy. Most available tax preparation programs with e-file options will check for errors and necessary information, plus you can usually file a state tax return at the same time you electronically file your federal return. Generally, when someone files electronically, their refund will be issued in about half the time it would take if they had filed a paper return. Direct deposit will help you get your refund in even less time, plus get your economic stimulus payment sooner, too.
If you're worried about losing a chunk of your refund to the electronic filing fee, you should check out the IRS-sponsored Free File. The program is only available to taxpayers whose 2007 adjusted gross income was $54,000 or less, but it's a great option for those who qualify.
REMEMBER -- you MUST file a return to get your economic stimulus check, even if you normally aren't required to file.
If you need a little extra time to finish your return, just file a Form 4868 to get an extension until Oct. 15. You could even get an extension on paying your tax debt by filling out an online payment agreement. If you do need any form of extension, make sure to apply by April 15 to avoid any late charges and interest fees.
If you receive unsolicited email or telephone calls from anyone claiming to be from the IRS, it's probably a scam. Don't click on any links; don't answer any questions. Forward the emails or report the calls to phishing@irs.gov.
Earned income of less than $39,783 in 2007 may qualify a taxpayer to claim the earned income tax credit worth up to $4,716. **If your EITC is more than you owe in taxes, then you could see a jump in your rebate check! If you're not sure if you qualify, just click here. Don't forget to check your returns for errors to make sure you get your rebate as quickly as possible!
--Double-check your figures
--Sign your form
--Attach all required schedules
--Send your return or request an extension by the April 15 filing deadline
