Calcium is a necessity for building strong bones! It is better absorbed through food than supplements. Some great sources include low fat milk, low fat yogurt and cheese.
Iron is crucial for carrying oxygen to your blood cells. In fact, a low iron count can cause you to feel tired, and has even been proven to affect students' math scores. Iron is, again, better absorbed through food than supplements at this stage in life. Red meat is best, but iron-fortified cereals, beans and spinach are also great sources. All of these are even more effective when combined with Vitamin C or citrus fruits and/or juices.
MOM & DAD
Keeping healthy levels of folic acid can prevent birth defects in children and even lower your own risk of heart disease. Folic acid is also best absorbed through food, though supplements are good for women who are planning to become pregnant.
VItamin D has been found to reduce the risk of several forms of cancer by 30-50%, lower your risk of death from any cause, and can help your body absorb calcium. Still, 74% of Americans don't have enough in their diets. Supplements are better in this case, if for no other reason than there are very few foods that naturally contain Vitamin D. Either take 1000 IU/day or D3 of Vitamin D, or spend about 15 minutes in unobstructed sunshine -- our skin can naturally absorb Vitamin D from sunlight.
GRANDMA & GRANDPA
Calcium and Vitamin D are two of the most crucial vitamins at this stage in life because they help to prevent or ease osteoporosis. Supplements are a fine source of both calcium and Vitamin D for older adults. Most nutritionists recommend 1200 mg/day of Calcium Nitrate *AND* 1000 mg/day of Vitamin D.

If you are only eating 2 or 3 meals a day, your body will store fat due to lack of food intake. Your body is saying, i need to store energy beacause it may be a while before i get more. So if you dont change the amount of food you eat each day, just the amount of times you sit down to eat, your metabolism reacts by increasing its metabolic rate and burning more fat and calories because you now have a steady supply of fuel and your body has no fear of running out of energy.
Now you can fine tune this method to loose or gain weight depending upon what you want to achieve. instead of 2 or 3 meals a day you are now eating 6 to 8 time a day. By adding a little to each meal you will see significant weight gains and by subtracting a little you will see significant losses. By a little i mean if for breakfast you are eating just one bowl of cereal, or one bagel with jam. Adding a piece of fruit or a granolla bar would be the ideal increase of substance to achieve weight gain. At the other end of the spectrum, if for lunch you are eating a 6oz chicken breast, potato salad, and a roll withe a soda. Leave the chicken breast alone but replace the potato salad with rice or baked chips and due away with the roll. You could even switch to a diet soda and that would be enough of an alteration to see dramatic change. Adding or subtracting just a little per meal over a short period of time can bring you phenominal changes that you wont believe. This method is what i ussually start my traniees out with and after we see our weight heading in the direction we want, then we impliment exercise and the results are again drastic.
