7. Battle of the Bands
This was a lot of fun. Daybreak got together with our friends from 103.7 The Buzz and asked local bands to send in their demos or CD's and let the viewers and listeners choose their top 5 favorite bands. The top 5 were, Hwy 5, Danger Ready, The Frup, Pail, and Subdue. We had all 5 play live at the Battle of the Bands live show at Cajun's Wharf. You the viewers and listeners chose The Frup as your favorite band. Click here to watch the video of The Frup live at Cajun's.
6. Digging for Diamonds
You know it's a good time when you get five ladies battling it out all to win diamonds! The goal is to dig, with your hands, through a cake to find the hidden jewel. The winner took home a pair of black diamond earrings from Sissy's Log Cabin.
5. Halloween 2007
If you've watched Daybreak for any length of time, you probably know I find any excuse to dress up in costume. Halloween is the day for me to go all out. This year I chose to go with one I had done a few years ago, Lt. Dangle from Reno 911. I was live that morning from Kyle Howard's house...he's one of our directors. His house was decorated to the max by he and Billy Cannon, our Newstar operator. This was a 48 hour operation for these two. Todd Yakoubian joined me live from 6-7am that morning dressed as a "Glue-me Day"..how cleaver! It was freezing cold that morning so the extremely short shorts I was wearing was a mistake.
4. Daybreak RV Roadtrip
Our very own Kristin Fisher became our RV reporter for 30 days, traveling the four corners of the Natural State. River City RV loaned us an RV and that became Kristin's home and mobile studio for a month. This was a great way to see Arkansas both from the historical and the RV point of view. RVing in Arkansas is HUGE and it was nice to see what life is really like "on the road". Kristin did a remarkable job telling stories from cities like Eureka Springs and El Dorado and 28 other cities in-between. At times it became comical with the lack of sleep Kristin was getting and lack of cleaning her RV was getting. All in all, it was an experience the both Kristin and the rest of us will never forget.
3. Tommy Smith's Haircut
Gold-plated hair clippers from Wal-Mart - $17.00
Barber's cape - $4.50
3 cups of hot coffee - $12.00
Watching Tommy squirm on-air while shaving his head - PRICELESS!
Tommy said he would shave his head if Arkansas beat LSU this season...well the Hogs won. In 2006 Tommy shaved his 'fro because LSU beat Arkansas. This time, I got the honor of shaving his mini 'fro live. I started by shaving a circle 7 in the back, then proceeded to make a "runway-like" cut straight down the middle. The many faces of Tommy is what was so funny. He resembles Jack Nicholson in The Shining. Tommy and David are always good sports and will do anything for a worthy cause. In this case...not a charity, but made for great tv.
2. The Buzz Celebrity Christmas Karaoke
This was the event to be at this past holiday season. Some 600 screaming people filled the sold-out seats at the Village where groups and individuals, all well-known celebrities, sung and danced their hearts out all for Youth Home. Our Channel 7 ladies brought the house down. With custom-made logo-ed cheer leading uniforms, the Circle 7 girls performed...and I mean performed, "Oh Mickey You're So Fine". To see the ladies, who normally have to be professional, serious, credible reporters/anchors, shed their inhibitions and let loose, was worth the price of the ticket. Seven On Your Side's Jason Pederson took home the first place trophy...again, for his rewritten version of "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch".
1. You've Got Spirit Pep Rallies
I was so pleased this year that week by week each school we visited represented their school spirit and now I've got a lot more friends than ever before. The Daybreak crew decided that every Friday during football season we'd go live from 5-7am to a different high school or college, and show off their spirit in whatever way possible. I was blown away. 5-7am is the worst time of the day for students to be excited...BUT you would've never known it. From fireworks, to airplanes dropping footballs, silly string, full marching bands, cheerleaders, dance teams...you name it...we saw it. School by school, the stands were full of excited fans, parents, siblings, faculty, all ready to show the previous school that theirs was better. We look forward to doing this again hopefully in 2008. Thanks to everyone that helped organize, cook early breakfasts, make signs and banners and just show up.
From all of us here on Daybreak, Beth, Melinda, and I...and all our crew that works behind the scenes...we thank you for watching every day. Thanks you for your emails, your calls, your participation, your input, etc. We look forward to bringing you more that's important to you and your family in 2008. We may even make you laugh along the way. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
