The Brummett Update

Today has been long and busy. So only now - at 10 PM - am I reading the latest round of blog posts about the Fisher vs. Brummett debate. It's on Blake's Think Tank, The Arkansas Project, The Arkansas Times, Arkansas Watch, The Tolbert Report, The Fayetteville Flyer... whew. But then there was this big scoop by Lance Turner. He writes, "BREAKING: Fisher having lunch with Brummett this very second!".

Yes, it's true. We lunched at Your Mamma's. No, there was no duel between a sharpened pencil and a clicky mouse... just yeast rolls and greasy goodness. How did it come to be, you ask? Well, I invited him to lunch and he accepted. After about an hour, we agreed to disagree. And now, I have some breaking news of my own.

After two weeks of peer pressure from the Arkansas blogosphere and now a personal invitation from yours truly, Brummett has kindly agreed to be a guest on the Daily Debrief. He will be on next Tuesday (December 9th) at 6:15. So saddle up and prepare your questions. From there, we will face-off at a debate sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists. It all starts at 7 PM inside the Arkansas Press Association Building (411 S. Victory St., Little Rock). The event is free and open to the public.

And yes, I will be armed with all the technologies of the 21st century... twittering, blogging, live streaming QIK feeds, and maybe even a good old fashioned camera.

Vicky is right. There is obviously room for both 'traditional news' and 'interactive news.' CNN, Fox, MSN, and many others are doing it successfully. Brummett's arrogant resistance to change and refusal to enter the 21st century is really just a display of fear and insecurity from uncertainty about something he doesn't understand - a normal reaction from, egotistical, close-minded, and/or ignorant people (not saying he is ignorant).

He insists that News should be whatever the professional newscasters determine and provide themselves - well, the professional newscasters are choosing to make news interactive.

The fact that interactive news exists is proof in itself of its legitimate place in News.

I wouldn't even waste my time with critics like him. Just have a good laugh, try not to feel sorry for them, and move on :)

I think that Brummett is dead wrong in his analysis of CYN. It has nothing to do with Kristen Fisher, although she certainly adds class to the story. The reason that I think he is wrong is that different people like to hear about different stories and this gives KATV a handle on what their listeners are concerned with. Keep up the good work!

All I have to say is that I hope you made him pay for the meal (even though you invited him) after all his anti-CYN blog posts. I'm just kidding, I'm glad y'all are working out your issues!

Vicky
Actually, I think there is more than enough room for both "old" media and "new" media. After all, you can't really duplicate the good ole fashioned feel and smell of fresh newsprint. Not to mention that seeing your words immortalized in print form is much more exhilarating than a 2 second sound bite on television.

Just to be clear, I'm a twit and a blogger, love the vid phone and can't live without TV.

Good luck with the debate!

Awesome! Looking forward to it. KATV has come upon a gold mine with CYN.

copy of email to jbrummett@arkansasnews.com (I would've BCC'd you but...)

I should have mailed this to you, on a dead tree contaminated with lead, but that would probably be a copyright violation.

Maybe the Secretary will print it out for you so you know how to access it.

If my tone seems a little contrite it's because I wanted the "Cougar Caught on Video in Camden" report on ABC today.

Can your newspaper print that for me?

The argument that you "can't choose your news" is flawed. What's news to me might not be news to you.

Keep it up, old media is shaking in their boots.

Choice is power
