LRPD for a Day

Today's story was entirely too short to give you guys a good idea of what it's like to be a Little Rock Police Officer.  So here are some excerpts from my interview with Officer Bruce Jones:

KRISTIN: What are the various duties of a patrol officer?  From the action-packed to the mundane, what does this job entail?

JONES:  This job entails a lot of different things and it can go from the not so exciting, someone may call about a dog loose in the neighborhood, and then you can go all the way up to a family disturbance which involves fighting in a household up to a murder.  So there's a whole host of things that you may have to respond to.  And a patrolman really has to wear a lot of different hats out here.

KRISTIN:  What are your favorite parts of the job?

JONES:  It is a rewarding job.  Not everyone gets to see the look on someone's face when you help them out of a bad situation.   Just yesterday morning I was able to help someone get their Christmas presents back after it had been stolen from their vehicle.  Not everybody gets to see that look and that is extremely rewarding when you feel like you've helped somebody or protected somebody and their property.

KRISTIN:  You're least favorite?

JONES:  For me, there's been a few injuries with this job.  And I've broken my hand a couple of times, I've broken my shoulder, my scapula, one of my legs, some ribs, so there's been some injures.  But that's not with everybody, you know?

KRISTIN:  So talk to me about some of the challenges about this job? What kind of toll does it take on your personal life?  This is really 24/7 right?

JONES:  It is.  When you're working out here on the streets you see a lot of things that you would like to leave at work, that you would like to think that you can forget about.  Some of them you just don't.  I know for myself, having worked in narcotics and having lost a partner, seeing somebody shot and losing a partner, it's something that you don't get rid of.  And you have to be right with your family.  And you don't' want to take that home and have a bad day at work and drag that home to your family.  So it can affect your family life.  And the shifts aren't always the greatest hours and that can affect it too.

KRISTIN: What are the crime stats like right now in LR?  What kinds of crimes are you guys seeing a lot of?

JONES: This time of year, we tend to see a rise in car breaking and enterings with Christmas presents and things of that nature.  We also see a rise in some home burglaries where people tend to go in and get things they know people have bought.  Is there a specific city in the area where it's really risen?  Not really.  It's just kind of sporadic throughout the city.

THANK YOU OFFICER BRUCE JONES!!
