In Case You Missed It

While I was shooting the "911 Dispatcher for a Day" story, the dispatchers at MECA in Pine Bluff made me take my first 911 call.  Don't worry, it's staged, but it was still rather intimidating.  Watch it here:

Apparently I made a big no-no for any 911 dispatcher.  I said, "uh-oh" while on the phone with the person who called 911.  Uh-oh?  Uh-oh!!  What was I thinking?!  Rule number one for 911 dispatchers... NEVER say uh-oh, oops, my bad, or anything to make you seem like you do not have a handle on the emergency.

Oops.

Also a 9-1-1 Dispatcher
If you could have seen everything that was filmed in the center you would know they did in fact watch REAL operators on duty. The individuals interviewed were veteran operators. I feel they did do justice to OUR profession in the time frame they had. The purpose of this was to show how difficult the job is. In a two minute segment it is IMPOSSIBLE to do and see everything as you should well know.

A 911 Dispatcher
Maybe, instead of being the 9-1-1 call taker, you and your crew could watch a real dispatcher for the shift, or even a larger portion of the shift. You might have been able to do justice to the profession, but this episode is being laughed at. (I've never heard the rule not to say "uh-oh"). A lot of the phone calls that a dispatcher takes are very serious, and some of them are later used in court during the trials of the suspects. Phone calls are necessary, obviously, and while some may seem silly to the call-taker,they are urgent to the caller. Phone calls are just part of a dispatchers duties. There is the radio traffic, warrant checks, report taking, and other duties. Dispatchers perform a necessary job, getting the information from the public to the officers/firefighters on the street. Imagine deciding that you need an officer, then having to go find one to help you...How about you doing a serious story about a Day in the Life of a Dispatcher?
