Buckling Up

On June 30th, the Arkansas seat belt law will change. At that point not wearing a seat belt will be a primary offense, meaning police officers and state troopers can pull you over solely for not wearing a seat belt. Earlier today the Arkansas State Police hosted a press conference along with several other people involved with the law change, including state officials and the state surgeon general. They talked about the importance of the law and what it took to get it passed. We'll have more from there at 6.

Myself, I'm a big seat belt wearer. My parents were always big on seat belts. In turn, I often get in the car and start driving without ever realizing I put my seat belt on. It's amazing how much of a habit it is for me.

I got some great story ideas on Twitter yesterday-please keep them coming!

YEA!!!!! If you don't want to wear a seatbelt, then, it may be up to you to pay your own medical bills, etc someday.

If there's a medical reason you believe you can't wear a seat belt, talk with the appropriate officials and your dr.

I agree with helmets; but, if you are speeding on a motorcycle, and become airborn, etc, a helmet may not adequatelt protect the brain and it surely won't protect the entire body.

I am glad I've been hearing that insurance companies are questoining about extreme sports; that is how some people riding on morcycles act.

I DON'T THINK IT'S FAIR...SOME PEOPLE LIKE ME CAN'T WEAR SEATBELTS BECAUSE OF SURGERY AND THE COPS DON'T CARE.

If we can legislate that all wear seat belts for the satefy of our citizens, why can't we legislate wearing helmets by motorcyclists? I agree with the seat belt law.... but simply don't understand why we can't force people on motorcycles to protect themselves too.

I believe this seat belt law should definitely be in effect. I always wear my seat belt when I drive, as well as my children. It has become a habit for me. And, it does save lives.

Let's not go half way here. Not only should people be pulled over for not wearing a seat belt, the fines should be higher for anyone under 18, with the actual amounts determined by their ages. The fines should be exceptionally high for small children who should be restrained in car seats.

When they make motorbike riders wear a helmet thats when i will start to wear a seat belt i think it silly that they think they have the right to dictate what we are able to do. we as people should be able to decide weather or not we want to wear one

Lynda Elliott
I think they can start pulling over for seat belts when they start pulling the motorcycles over for not having helments on.

Caught your brief story on the new seatbelt law this afternoon at five. There was a reference some orginization having concerns that the new law might lead to "racial profiling". Please help me understand the reasoning. What does one's race have to do with wearing or not wearing a seatbelt?

ann
no,i think this should be personal choice.i do not believe that people should be stopped for this.
