I was very proud of myself this morning because I actually woke up without too much trouble. I have a feeling I'm going to get adjusted to this schedule just in time for the Road Trip to end. Oh well.
I'm so glad Brinkley is one of our stops on this trip. I've been here several times for other stories and the people have always been so friendly. In fact, my senior year in college at USC, I was in a class that required us to turn in a weekly "enterprise" story, which is essentially a story you seek out without a press release or anything. I came home for Thanksgiving with all of my equipment thinking I would do a story here in Arkansas and take it back to California with me the following week.
This was at the height of the ivory billed woodpecker mania, so I decided I would do a story about the search for the bird and its effect on the Brinkley economy. My mother and I drove in from Little Rock one morning. Here I was, just a college student with a little DV camera and tripod. The people of Brinkley could not have been nicer. They treated me just like I was a legitimate reporter and were as helpful as they could be. I'll never forget that.
We'll be talking about the ivory billed woodpecker again today and this time I am a legitimate reporter. I also want to tour the Depot Museum here and find out more about jazz great Louis Jordan. And we may have to hit up Gene's again for lunch, just to sample a little of that catfish. I'll let you know how that goes.
